Why is the world's popualation not MUCH higher than it is?

World wars, pestilence, drought, famine, civil wars, birth control, suicides, AIDS, floods, hurricanes, blizzards, car wrecks, plane crashes, booze, poison, knitting and embroidering catastrophes.
