How do I record VHS movies into my computer and convert them into either VCD or DVD...?

I have an old VHS player which my father bought back in the 1990s (don't ask me for the brand, it's faded and the manuals are lost), and it still works, with my VHS player, how do I record VHS movies into my computer? And what freeware software do I use?
