Why does anyone care about the polls?

Obama is ahead in the polls and all of a sudden everybody thinks he is going to be the next president? Weren't Al Gore and John Kerry ahead of Bush in the polls also? I thought the only meaningful polls were the ones you go to in November to vote. If so, then why do people try to brag about who's ahead in the polls?
