What do I do to fix a crashed hard drive?

I would LOVE if someone could do helpful advice. I am absolutely computer illiterate! What are the best solutions for a crashed hard drive? I know that there are SOME which are extremely costly, but I'm hoping to find something easier on my budget. Help me out?
