What determines if you are likely to have twins?

My great grandma had 4 sets of unidentical twins (Not all of them survived and I believe that she also had 4 other singleton births). I have heard that it is hereditary, but that it skips generations??? So my question is how does it skip generations, and does it make me more likely to get pregnant with twins at some point?
