i don't think he's a player. players don't last in relationships for two and a half years. and since that girl tried kissing or hugging him or whatever, and he told her to back off, then went with you, he's probably interested in a relationship with you. and i can't promise you won't get hurt cause i don't know you or this guy personally. but best of luck, try dating him :]
